The malla is a Buddhist rosary.  Practitioners chant a mantra (usually 'Om mani padme hum') for each of the beads.  There are usually 108 beads on a malla as this is a very auspicious number in Buddhism.  According to ancient teachings, there are 108 invisible threads from each person to the divine.  Chanting a mantra 108 times awakens these threads and aids meditation.
